Kirkleatham Museum & Gardens, Redcar
Kirkleatham Museum is the local history museum for the Borough of Redcar & Cleveland. It was opened on 5th October 1981, after the rationalisation of the Museums Service. The Service was originally based at the Chapel Beck Gallery, Guisborough and the Redcar Museum of Shipping and Fishing, now the Zetland Museum on the seafront in Redcar. Kirkleatham Museum became the Service's headquarters and in 1986 a new building, the Pavilion, was opened to provide an exhibition hall and office accommodation.

There are always exciting things going on in the Museum. Here are some activities you can do with your family during your visit to Kirkleatham.
Explorer Eddie the Museum Teddy is waiting to meet you and would love to explore the museum with you. He has a backpack full to exciting activities for you to do with your family, as you venture round the museum and grounds.
With Explorer Eddie you can create your own work of art, change the colours of the exhibits, explore what materials they are made out of, become a Museum Detective and much more&.
Explorer Eddie and his backpacks can be borrowed from the Museum Shop with the placement of a returnable deposit, such as your car/house keys or credit card. You may then explore with Eddie for up to 2 hours&but dont forget to bring him back ready to meet the next Museum Explorer Family.
Memories of Childhood Traditional Games Boxes
Each box has a selection of traditional and garden toys and games for you to discover and play with in the Museums gardens and grounds. Games include quoits, skittles, skipping ropes, boolah (hoop & stick), kites, as well as giant versions of favourite boards games like draughts, Snakes and Ladders and noughts and crosses.
Games boxes may be borrowed from the Museum shop with the placement of a returnable deposit, such as your car/house keys or credit card. You may then play with the games anywhere in the Museum grounds for 2 hours.
Larger boxes are also available for group bookings and parties.
Treasure Hunts Special exhibitions have treasure hunts and quizzes to help you explore them. Here you will find the quiz sheets and Hunt instructions to print out ready for your visit.
Events and Activities
The SPIDER Centre provides family craft activities every Tuesday and Thursday of school holidays. Most activities are FREE with all materials provided. The sessions are drop-in, so as long as you are with a responsible adult, you can come and join in any time between 10 am and 12 noon or 1 pm and 4 pm.
