Review of the new Spa at Alpamare
Raring2go! Reviews the new Wellness Centre & Spa at Alpamare, Scarborough
relax. rewind. rejuvenate
"An absolute gem of a spa!"
From super slides to serene spa treatments Alpamare has treats for all the family guaranteed whatever the weather & with its cliff top location some of the best sea views too!
We checked out the brand new Alpine themed Wellness Centre & Spa that is the latest addition to Alpamare.
This unique Spa is on the first floor above the water park, so offers amazing views from the sun terrace and Panorama Sauna with its floor to ceiling window overlooking Scarborough’s beautiful North Bay.
On arrival, you are given a cosy dressing gown & towel (no slippers so do remember to bring your own). The changing area is shared with the family water park, so once in your dressing gown, head upstairs and through the spa doors you enter another world. We were greeted by the very friendly and helpful Angela, who gave us an informative tour of all the facilities. We were given information cards to show us the different areas to visit, depending on what kind of experience we wanted from the afternoon – Wellness Detox, Hamam Relax or Sauna Vitality. Armed with a complimentary exfoliating mitt we entered the Hamam zone.
The Hammam (wet) zone has a large, dry, elevated, warm stone seating area, where guests can relax. This is a flat, dry area, ideal for warming your body relaxing and chatting. From this area there are several choices - a Herbal Steam Bath that relaxes and aids breathing, a Soap Steam Bath – ideal for massaging the skin with your exfoliation mitt, a Rhassoul Bath – a Turkish bath with therapeutic muds that convey important minerals to the skin (this is an additional cost of £8.00 and can be booked at the Spa reception). There are also powerful showers and relaxing foot baths along with water on tap ensuring you keep hydrated during your visit.
Next, we moved on to the (dry) Sauna area. Saunas have been part of all Northern European cultures since the medieval times, the hot and cold elements increase your circulation and reduce stress. First, we entered the beautiful Panorama Sauna and enjoyed The Aufguss (German for “infusion”) a wellness and purification ceremony performed by an “Aufgussmeister”.
The ceremony involves placing 3 different essential oil infused ice balls on the hot coals to create hot, scented steam which was wafted around us using rhythmical movements of a towel. The ceremony was skilfully performed by Emily, one of the Alpamare life guards. After the ceremony we headed out to the fresh air and into the shower tunnel for hot then cold showers. The combination of hot followed by cold leaves you feeling amazing!
After that we ventured downstairs and outdoors to enjoy the healing iodine infinity pool and the garden pool, with its whirlpools and bubble recliners. We visited on a term time Friday afternoon in May, so the pools were very peaceful, the sun was shining, perfect weather to chill out and enjoy the view of the sea.
After an hour or two outside we returned to the spa to sample the ice and aroma showers followed by more relaxation in the large Clay Sauna – the dry heat was very relaxing and eased away tensions.
The Hay Bath was next, a relaxation room designed in a rural, rustic Alpine style with hay from North Yorkshire pastures emitting a fabulous aroma as you relax on the suspended beds. After that we indulged in a glass of Prosecco and a relaxing reflexology foot spa enjoying the sea view.
In summary, the Wellness Centre offers some unique experiences in a beautiful relaxing environment and, at the end of my treatments I felt destressed, refreshed and relaxed. The staff were knowledgeable, helpful and very friendly. The spa itself is second to none, with exceptionally clean and unique facilities. The handy guides to the 3 spa rituals, each taking 2-3 hours were very useful. These rituals will take you on a tour through the Spa facilities. The reception bar offers refreshments and the complimentary fruit infused water was lovely.
Spa entry is for 6 hours, for latest opening times and prices please visit www.alpamare.co.uk
“What an absolute gem of a Spa. It is spacious, beautifully designed and spotlessly clean. The location is perfect with great views over the sea, the pool water was lovely and warm, the sun was shining - we could’ve been anywhere on the Med.
The Wellness Centre and Spa is deceptively large with plenty of therapeutic rooms to choose from, all very modern and clean. I really liked the Hay Bath as it was totally different to anything I’d experienced before at a Spa and although I admit to initially being a little apprehensive before the Aufguss Ceremony, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
On this occasion we didn’t take any of the therapies available although the list of Elemis treatments looked comprehensive including facials for men and pregnancy massage.
Having access to the pools at Alpamare is a great asset to the Spa experience, allowing you to chill out in the warm outdoor pools (or for the more dynamic – ride the water park slides) during your visit.
This Spa is going to be attractive to a wide range of people and at the same time as we visited the Spa there were couples and other groups of ladies enjoying the facilities. I can see this being a real hit with parents who drop the kids off in the water park whilst they enjoy the peace of the Spa (there’s a viewing area over the indoor pool), groups of ladies wanting a twilight get together and of course the compulsory pampering during a hen weekend. My advice to my mum friends would be go during school hours. I regularly visit the water park with my kids, but I’ve never had such a peaceful afternoon of “me time”, in the outdoor pool area. A totally different experience.
It was a thoroughly delightful way to spend a Friday afternoon and I’ve already arranged a second visit with another group of friends for next month.”
Thankyou to Tracy Parkes for her review.
Notes for parents
The Wellness Centre & Spa are very much part of the Alpamare water park – they share changing facilities and the larger relaxation room and terrace look out over the water park. Useful if you want to combine a family day out with a treat for Mum or Dad.
