Homework Q&A with Explore Learning

b1675fe186f78be4a227e4ddf2e15565.jpgWe often speak to parents who have take one look at their child’s homework, only to be met with what looks like a page of hieroglyphics! All that work after school can feel daunting at times.

That’s why we’ve answered these commonly asked questions to help you feel confident helping your child at home.

Q: What’s the point of kids having homework?

This is primarily about building habits and discipline. Children that get used to doing school work at home during primary school are developing study habits that will build a great foundation for secondary school and beyond.

Q: How much time should my child spend on their homework?

This varies greatly depending on a child’s age. Most activities should require a focused period between 20 minutes and an hour.

Q: Do I really need to help my child with their homework?

The most important thing is for homework to be a positive experience and this is where a parent’s role is key. Here are some tips:

  • Make a plan with your child – for example, on Saturday plan out all your activities and include your 1hr block to dedicate to homework and be free to help. Why not write it up on a planner so everyone knows what’s happening and when?
  • Do some prep - before homework time make sure desks are clear and gather all the resources that your child may need. The goal should be for children to do this eventually but initially 079e96cdc45560fdb4c12f1c2350bea4.jpgit avoids unnecessary delays!
  • Have everyone occupied in a quiet activity.
  • Set the timer – agree an amount of time and stop when the timer beeps.
  • Agree how you are going to help – you know best your child’s strengths and weaknesses and where they might need to be a little bit brave!
  • Try not to bribe by telling your child they can watch television afterwards, for example. Say you have agreed the time and so that’s what you are going to do.
  • Remain calm!

Q: What if I don’t understand what my child is learning?

If you are unsure what is being asked of your child, speak with the class teacher, fellow parents or other support networks such as Explore Learning to help guide you.

Q: Should my child be relying on the internet for their homework?

The internet is a fabulous resource and it’s really important that our children learn how to navigate it correctly. Help them to look out for ‘fake news’. Talk about ways finding two sources of credible information that say the same thing before assuming that the facts are correct. Discuss what makes a credible website, for example news websites like Britannica encyclopaedia etc.

Q: What do I do if I feel my child is getting too much homework?

Talk to your class teacher regarding your concerns and agree how much time your child should be spending on activities.

Teachers do not want your child to be having negative learning experiences and they will do what they can to support you in this area.

Q: How can I make homework fun?

Have some activities planned and agreed for once homework is complete. Get excited about your child’s work yourself, too by sharing some of your own ideas. Jump on any ideas that they share and encourage them to keep developing them.

Q: When is the best time to get my child to do their homework?

It’s best not to leave homework until the day before it’s due in because this definitely adds to the stress! Pop it on the family planner at a time when you will be free to look at it with your child and ideally get into a habit of doing it on the same day each week so it becomes a natural part of the family routine.
