Salisbury Museum

The Salisbury Museum is located in the medieval King’s House, in the glorious setting of Cathedral Close opposite the west end of the Cathedral. The museum has fantastic collections, family events and exhibitions year round.

A new world-class gallery of archaeology houses one of Europe’s most extensive collections of Stonehenge and prehistoric artefacts. The gallery is a journey back through time from the medieval period to the earliest evidence of human occupation in the Salisbury area. Here you can discover ancient Wessex and its pivotal place in the story of England and see the nationally important finds and treasures from Old Sarum, Stonehenge and the surrounding landscape. Discovery drawers and cupboards help to tell the stories of these treasures.

The museum also houses galleries devoted to the history of Salisbury and featuring the Giant and Hob Nob. Other galleries are devoted to costume, dolls and samplers, Downton Lace, ceramics and glass and a reconstruction of a well-known doctor’s surgery from the 1940’s. Two dressing up corners in the costume and Salisbury galleries bring history alive with costumes from Salisbury’s past and the opportunity to dress up as a soldier, a Georgian lady, Victorian housemaid or even the Giant.

The museum offers a dynamic programme of events all year round, including special half term events for children and Discovery Days which run every Tuesday through the summer holidays. Under 5s Fridays for preschoolers run on the 2nd Friday of every month. See our website for each month's art & craft theme.

The museum has a shop with cards, books, gifts and a variety of pocket money treasures. There is an independent cafe - The King’s House Café, which serves delicious light lunches and homemade cakes.
