Walking to School is for everyone!


17a0e72e70f566ac3a65a5545fab3963.jpgNot everyone lives close enough to school to be able to walk their kids, but Afon House Chiropractic Clinic have an idea that just might work for the rest of us.....

Whilst chatting recently to one of my patients during her treatment, she told me that her car had broken down and she had to walk her son for 30 minutes to school and back every day. This meant that she was walking for two hours per day and although this seemed like an impossible task to start with, she built the extra time into her diary and found that both her and her son really enjoyed the time they spent together. She had been planning to increase her exercise levels since her back pain had improved, but hadn't found the time and so this was the perfect opportunity. At the start, she felt tired and achy after the walks but by the second week of walking to school, she was starting to notice she felt stronger and was able to manage the distance easily.

This story got me thinking about how we get our children to school. For those of us who live far away from our children's school and would normally drive, walking seems too impractical. However, we are always in a rush, struggling to find a parking space, running late for work and ending up starting the day stressed. What if we took the time to park that little bit further away in order to 90de32b3a4d9b8ffd92f83ec928b84f3.jpgwalk our children that last mile? Granted, most of us would struggle to find an extra two hours, but by parking just 10 minutes away, you will be getting a 40 minute walk per day with 20 minutes of quality time with your child.

This is not only good for your body, increasing your exercise levels, but also for your mind, as physical activity is a great stress reliever. Furthermore, it will be of benefit to your child, providing them with exercise which, research shows, will aid their concentration at school, as well as keeping them healthy and teaching them about road safety. If more of us tried it, we would also be helping the environment by reducing CO2 levels, saving ourselves petrol money and making life easier for the residents who live close to the school by easing parking congestion.

It really is a win-win situation for everybody.
