The Commandery, Worcester

The Commandery, Worcester

The Commandery, a beautiful Grade I listed building in the heart of historic Worcester, was once known as Saint Wulfstan's Hospital and it was the battle headquarters for the Royalist army of Charles II during the decisive Battle of Worcester, the final battle of the English Civil War.

Over the centuries since, it has had many different owners. Its 800 year history is full of stories for the whole family to find out about - tales of power, greed, war, wealth, romance, death, society and industry.

When you get to The Commandery, you could explore the building (which is a lot bigger than it looks!) and grounds with the audio guide to tell you more. Don't miss the glorious medieval great hall, the beautiful monastic painted chamber and the mysterious Prince Arthur's funeral pall.

To get into the spirit of the building's past, you could attend one of the regular short talks and demonstrations, including medieval medicine and Civil War weaponry - you might even get dressed up as a pikeman! Ask at reception to find out what's going on that day.

Activities for Children:

Each school holiday The Commandery hosts historic themed activities - you can find out more on our website about these - and we have some new activity trail backpacks for you to try (for an extra £1 towards materials). You'll also find historic games in the building, and a big garden to run around in!

Keep an eye out for exciting activities and events throughout the year, when The Commandery springs to life and fills with historic re-enactors, living history camps and historic games - check the website to find out about the next one.
