I adore flowers and love spending time in my garden and 17th century barn conversion in the quaint town of Needham Market in Suffolk. Gardening is in my blood – my parents are keen gardeners and my late grandparents were too so I grew up with a love of gardening. My first weekend job was in a garden centre where I was taught how to make bouquets from Chrysanthemums grown at the garden centre.
I trained as a florist in 1999 and had a floral and garden themed gift shop for a few years before starting a family.
In 2018 I read an article about grower florists and I had a lightbulb moment – I love the idea of growing my own flowers to sell directly to customers. Many of the flowers I grow are not available in supermarkets – Sweet Peas, Dahlias, Cosmos, Scabious, Zinnias and ornamental grasses.
I see the whole process from seed to sale and try to be as conscious of my impact on the environment as possible – I wash up my pots to reuse, use minimal pesticides, collect rainwater in water butts, put my used compost on the garden as mulch and compost my green waste. I wrap my posies in biodegradable packaging and as the flowers grow they attract bees and butterflies.
Whilst I use as many of my own flowers as possible, I am very small scale so it is often necessary for me to buy in extra flowers to be able to fulfil orders. As much as possible I use British flowers but if this is not practical I do have to resort to imported flowers.
