Have you herd?
This summer will see the city transformed into a fun, free art space as a herd of beautifully designed elephant sculptures parade through Worcester’s streets and public spaces. Around thirty large elephants will go on display during an eight-week art trail alongside 35 calves designed by local schools and community groups.
A Wild in Art trail, the event is being brought to Worcester by St Richard’s Hospice to say thank you to the community for its support and to help create lasting memories after a challenging year for everyone.
Each large elephant sculpture is being funded by companies and individuals from across Worcestershire before being auctioned in October 2021 to raise funds for the free care and support that St Richard’s provides. The project builds on the hugely successful Worcester Stands Tall giraffe trail in 2018, which saw giraffe sculptures displayed across the city before raising £210,000 for the hospice at auction.
A host of big-name brands and locally-based organisations have signed-up as elephant sponsors include the likes of Worcester Bosch, Morgan Motor Company, West Midlands Safari Park and Spontex.
Worcester’s Big Parade will run from Monday 12 July until Sunday 5 September 2021. It is supported by partners Crowngate, Worcester City Council, Worcester Business Improvement District (BID), the Worcester News and BBC Hereford & Worcester.
Maps can be picked up at locations across the city including Tourist Information, The Guildhall, the parade pop-up shop on Broad Street and The Cathedral.
They can also be downloaded from the website here.
The Worcester’s Big Parade App is available for download from the Apple App Store and Google Play. It costs £1.99 with funds raised supporting St Richard’s Hospice. It’s fantastic for families who can follow their way around the trail, collect sculptures and vote for favourites, and share pictures of them taking part in the trail.
There is also the pop-up shop at 57 Broad Street selling all things elephant including more than 3,000 beautiful, handcrafted elephants made by hospice supporters for a donation to St Richard’s. Lots of pocket money items too like pens, pencils, keyrings etc.
