Raring2go! Hereford and Worcester 2021 Sunflower Competition
Competition closes 31 Aug 2021
This year we are pleased to announce that our sunflower competition is kindly sponsored by The Waterworks Museum in Hereford. The Museum is a fantastic place for a family day out, and you could be visiting absolutely free! One of our amazing prizes up for grabs in this competition is a 12 month annual family pass to The Waterworks Museum in Hereford.
To enter, take photos of your sunflowers as they grow, and simply send them in to our Facebook page here or by by email here for entry into the draw.
You can enter up to 5 times, to be in with the chance of winning some amazing prizes, including a 12 month annual family pass to The Waterworks Museum, Hereford, and a £15 voucher to spend in the children’s shop The Entertainer in Hereford.
There are many types of sunflowers, some small, others HUGE! But we aren’t worried about size - grow a small one in a tub if you like - it’s purely about getting out there, planting and growing your sunflower. And if you don’t have space in your own garden, why not ask a friend or relative if you can plant your sunflower in their garden instead?
You can buy seeds in many local supermarkets, garden centres, or online, but to help start you off, we have packets of seeds you can pick up absolutely free! These will grow into Giant Yellow Single Sunflowers which grow 200 - 300 cm high!
You can collect your free seeds (while stocks last) from:
The Hub Café, The Hub@ St Peters, St Peters Church HR2 0RT on Tuesdays - Thursdays from 11am-3pm
Clehonger Village Stores, Birch Hill Road HR2 9RF Monday-Saturday 7am-7pm, Sunday 8:30-1pm
You can sow sunflower seeds under cover through March to April, in a warm sunny place. A sunny windowsill is a great place. Put some compost into separate pots and add a few drops of water to make sure its damp - an old yogurt pot with small drainage holes poked in the bottom will work just fine. Don't forget to stand it on a saucer or tray! Push your seeds into the compost about half a centimetre deep, and cover them with a little more compost. Don't let the compost dry out, but don't make it too soggy either.
You can plant your seedlings outside in a sunny spot in late May. You can even plant them into large tubs.
Don't worry if you have left seed planting little late - you can sow seeds directly out in your garden, directly into the soil, in late May too!
Sunflowers will grow in most garden soils, and like full sun. If they get really tall, you may need to loosely tie them to bean pole to help them stay upright.
The competition runs until the end of August, the winner will be announced in the Autumn magazine.
Winners will be selected upon closing of the competition and notified by email.
