Get your kids active for free this summer
With the summer holidays around the corner and the sun looking like it’s here to stay, it’s a perfect time to get outdoors and get active with your children.
Sadly, only 20% of boys and 14% of girls in England are getting the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day despite 95% of children saying that they enjoy being active.
If you are stuck for ideas, Public Health England, Disney UK and Sport England launched a new Change4Life 10 Minute Shake Up campaign. The campaign is encouraging kids to get active by playing new 10 Minute Shake Up games, inspired by favourite characters from Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 4 and Incredibles 2, and Disney's The Lion King and Frozen.
The 10 Minute Shake Up campaign is being supported by McFly musician and judge on The Voice Kids, Danny Jones, who feels passionately about encouraging kids to try new activities and have fun, and who has personal experience of how physical activity can help develop the skills you need to face life’s challenges.
Evidence shows that children and young people who are more active have more confidence, higher self-esteem, less anxiety and stress, and better social skills – attributes that can help them deal with the challenges they face in daily life.[i],[ii] By getting your children to take part in these 10 Minute Shake Up games, it will count towards the minimum 60 minutes of activity kids need to be doing every day.
Not only are all these games fun and free for kids to play with friends or family, but you can do them anytime, anywhere! So, whether you’re wanting to be strong like Mr Incredible, agile like Simba or have stamina like Elsa- there’s something for everyone to enjoy and get active with this summer.
To inspire kids to get active and show that you can have fun whilst doing so, Danny Jones visited a primary school in South London, where he attended a Year 4 PE lesson and coached the kids through some of the new Shake Up games. Have a look below to see how Danny got on...
Danny Jones said: “Being physically active gives me energy, helps me focus and puts me in a good mood. I’m supporting this Change4Life 10 Minute Shake Up campaign to help kids have fun getting active so they can develop skills that will help them throughout their life.”
Alongside these games, Change4Life and Disney UK have also launched a new online quiz to help children, with their parents, find activities and sports that might be perfect for them to try, based on their skills and abilities. Get online and give this quick quiz a go to find activities that you might never have thought of trying!
