Kuk Sool Won - Traditional Korean martial arts
Kuk Sool Won™ is the systematic study of all traditional martial arts and seeks to integrate and explore all aspects of the traditional Korean martial arts. As a martial arts system it can help to improve fitness, confidence and concentration, relieve stress, and teach self-defence, all of which are so important today.
Kuk Sool Won™ of Claygate and Great Bookham is a family orientated club. Not only do we encourage family's to come and train together (at one of our specific Family Classes), but we also welcome new students into the Kuk Sool Won™ family which has been developed both here at our club, and world wide.
Chief Instructor, James Barker is a 5th Degree Black Belt, practising in the art since 1992, and is also a fully qualified Secondary School Physical Education Teacher.
Our mission is to develop all our students into Black Belt Champions who strive to live in harmony with their families and communities by demonstrating a positive attitude based on self discipline, respect and loyalty. To accomplish this we offer professional and dynamic martial arts classes which empower all our students to set goals of self improvement towards excellence. Maximum progression is achieved through the realistic and manageable steps of our extensive syllabus. We lead by example and support all our students in adopting the determined philosophy necessary to achieve success in life, hoping that our ethics will reach wider communities as a result.
Generally, etiquette and respect are two of the main pillars of the Kuk Sool Won™ spirit which enrich the experience of learning a traditional Martial Art. As such, the Association strives to educate all students about these concepts. All students are encouraged to learn and properly execute all forms of etiquette and respect to each other, in particular to senior students. It is through proper education and corrections that all students may fully appreciate the physical and mental training of Kuk Sool Won™. It is the Association’s goal to bring the best possible learning atmosphere for all students; however, the Association reserves the right to terminate the membership of any student, if the student continues to lack (and the desire to attain) proper etiquette and respect. Depending on rank and position, each student has various privileges and responsibilities. All students are subject to these rules and regulations, which may change at any time.
We expect our students to have:
- To be responsible
- Use Instructor titles
- Practice Formal Bowing
Our Junior classes are uniquely divided based on age and ability (belt achieved):
- Tiny Tigers - 4-6 years of age
- Tigers - 6-8 years of age
- Mini Mantis - 8-11 years beginners (White and Yellow Belts)
- Mantis - Intermediate Juniors (Blue, Red and Brown Belts)
- Dragons - Advanced Juniors (DBN and Black Belts)
We also offer classes for Youth (11+) and Adults (18+), which are divided into:
- Beginner/Intermediate Youth & Adult classes (White to Brown Belts)
- Advanced Youth & Adult classes (DBN and Black Belts)
Our unique children’s program is designed to teach students far more than just how to kick and punch. We are very concerned with the well-being, health and education of children, and aim to influence all our children in becoming achievers in life as well as martial arts.
- We promote non-violent resolutions to conflict, yet we strongly believe a child must develop the skills and ability to defend themselves.
- Students will develop greater confidence and self-discipline, as they learn how to react to the world around them.
- Our young students are treated with respect and are taught to return the same respect for others.
- We believe in praise, encouragement and positive reinforcement. Parents that work with us as a team will enjoy seeing their child strive for excellence, at school, home and Kuk Sool Won™.
Below are some of the areas in which your child will experience improvements:
- Attention Span
- Motor Skills
- Fitness Levels
- Self Defence
- Never Give Up Attitude
- Leadership Skills
- Self Esteem
We feel very strongly about the benefits of Kuk Sool Won™ for young people and believe that with the support of parents these benefits can be achieved by every junior student. Whilst achieving all these aims your child will also have fun taking part in high-energy classes and along the way will make lots of new friends that will last a lifetime.
