This castle arrived ready for assembly. The children were both very excited about the picture on the front of the box...but a word of warning assembly took a bit of time so best do this bit without the kids!! The instructions were easy to follow and once together it felt very sturdy.
The detail in the illustrations on the wall is fantastic, on the outside castle walls, lights and greenery and on the inside the castle shows different rooms including a bubbling cauldron room, a throne room and a treasure room hidden behind doors. The castle front is depicted as a dragon and when the drawbridge is lowered it looks as if the Dragon is breathing fire. Ben really loved this detail.
There are lots of extras that come with the castle, three wooden figures and some plastic accessories such as a ladder, treasure chest and dragons egg. Some of the smaller plastic items such as the bat have not been played with as much but it didn't distract from the overall impression of this toy.
My son is 3 and daughter is 5, both have loved playing with this castle and it has been great to see Isabella introducing narrative to her play and Ben joining in. The wooden figures are fantastic quality and they have really enjoyed making up stories with the ogre, Dragon and Knight. Ben has also been introducing some of his dinosaurs into the play and they have been really focused for long periods of storytelling. Isabella has questioned where the princess is (very much into princesses at the moment!) But she has made up some wonderful adventures and used different figures to add other storylines.
There are interactive features such as a turning system for the doorway and secret trap doors and dungeons inside the castle. It is really well designed and the two outside sections come together for easy storage but it is a toy that once together is together so make sure you think of a space where it can be stored or displayed.
Overall this castle supports imagination and creative play. We have had chicken pox in the house this week and the castle has been a great distraction!! A wonderful small world resource and one that I can see will be played with for many years to come.
The Howting Family
Isabella and Ben are the cutest half of our family - aged 5 and 3 they keep Mummy and Daddy on our toes! As a family we love getting creative, making a mess (Ben), dressing up (Isabella) and family days out.
