Explore More Than 600 Years of History at Raby Castle
Raby Castle is a wonderful family day out. There are a range of facilities, attractions and services which will keep all ages occupied.
Raby Castle was built by the mighty Nevills in the 14th century and is one of the finest and best-preserved medieval castles in North East England. Since 1626 it has been home to the Vane family and is currently the seat of the 12th Lord Barnard.
The Parks & Gardens
Raby Castle is surrounded by 200 acres of lush green parkland, where herds of red and fallow deer live wild. Explore the park and amble around the ponds to spot plenty of wildlife that inhabit this remarkable setting. We have 5 acres of traditional 18th century ornamental Walled Gardens which include fabulous yew hedges, a fig house, rose garden, trees, plants and ornamental features. If you’re feeling energetic, we also have a Woodland Adventure Playground for children and offer bike hire to explore the grounds and experience the spectacular views.
Nestled amongst part of Raby’s vast woodlands is the leafy Woodland Adventure Playground which is free to enjoy. Children have been known to spend hours here having fun on the rustic obstacle course that includes an army style zip wire, while adults can sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Raby Park. The car park and picnic area are close by, as well as plenty of wide-open space for kids to run around. Our food kiosk sells a range of takeaway items to enjoy while they play.

The activity sheet can be collected on entry to the Castle at the Portcullis Gate, where the trail begins. There’ll be questions to answer and items to look out for, and our helpful guides are always on hand to assist with any tricky answers!

The Stables Cafe and Shop are located in the Coach Yard. Admission is free. Our Stables Cafe was renovated in 2018. We have retained the character of the former horse stalls and updated the décor making this a stylish place to enjoy coffee, lunch and afternoon tea with friends and family. Many of the stalls still bear the name plaques of the horses that were once housed there.
The Stables Shop is adjacent to the Café and Coach House. It was also redesigned for 2018 and has lots of new items which have been carefully selected to offer visitors an interesting selection of gifts, homewares, confectionery, preserves, chutneys, toys and pocket money items to suit all budgets. Retail ranges change on a regular basis and include plants during the warmer months and a magical Christmas shop from November.
