Killhope - A Grand Day Out!

Killhope is a multi-award winning 19th century mining museum in the centre of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), where you can experience the life and work of the lead mining families of the North Pennines.

Famous for its working waterwheel, a visit to Killhope is a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages. Our team will ensure you have a day to remember, you can explore the site and exhibition halls, accompany one of our guides on a mine tour and visit the refurbished shop and café to complete a grand day out.

Killhope is also home to Great Britain's largest collection of spar boxes. These unique works of art made of crystals and minerals found by the lead miners working underground are also displayed at the site.

The museum is 450meters (1500 feet) above sea level. We recommend that even in summer you come dressed for adventure and wear warm clothing and sensible footwear so that you can make the most of your visit.

Killhope offers an amazing day out for the whole family, whether you're looking for fun or to immerse yourself in history. Explore our woodland and visit the revamped Killhope shop and refurbished café to complete a grand day out.

Mine Trips at Park Level Mine

Put on your wellies and hard hat and join us for an incredible adventure underground. No visit to Killhope would be complete without taking a guided tour of our Victorian lead mine. Guided tours of the mine take about an hour from kitting up to kitting down. You will be underground for about 45 minutes. Wellies are essential as you will be walking through water but we can lend you some if you have not brought your own.
