Win a personalised, signed copy of “Granny Franny’s Big Red Bus”
Competition closes 18 Jul 2020
Sonia Beldom has quite a varied CV. Her background in TV and radio production has seen her contribute to popular shows such as “An Idiot Abroad”. She’s also a popular performance coach and therapist…
…But her biggest love is driving a big red London double-decker bus, which she uses to take tourists around some of the city’s most famous sights. Forced to chock the wheels indefinitely due to COVID-19, Beldom has embarked on her most ambitious project yet – a children’s picture book about a granny who finds herself behind the bus’s wheel.
‘Granny Franny's Big Red Bus’ could just be the most unique and quirky children’s book on the market. Beldom won’t say where the similarities between her and Granny Franny start and end…although most suspect there are many!
Granny Franny’s energy for life means she is constantly trying new things and thinking up brilliant ideas. When she decides on a special birthday surprise for her grandchildren by driving them around London, she gets a bit carried away. She’s never driven a bus and the only one for sale is a long way away. It’s only when she arrives at the bus yard she realises what she’s taken on … and then she meets Thinkerbell the talking bus bell. Thinkerbell knows a lot and has invented the BUSNET where she can communicate with friends Fifi the Firebell, Saira the ambulance siren and Harry the tractor horn. The full-colour, vivid illustrations in the book help tell the story of Granny Franny’s obstacles, problems and life-changing decisions on her way back home in time for her Jax and Ronni’s big birthday. Time is ticking, the rain starts to fall and it looks like she won’t make it.
“We’re all bored during lockdown, so I wanted to call on my real-life bus driving experiences to craft something fun, engaging, educational, and totally off the wall!” admits the author. “Granny Franny’s magical mystery tour of London mimics many of the tours I’ve led over the years, many of which end up being memorable for all of the right (or wrong!) reasons. At the end of the day, driving a London double-decker is so much fun, so I wanted to bring that across in a story anyone can enjoy.”
Continuing, “I’m also hugely passionate about raising money for bus-related good causes, and wanted this book to be the literal vehicle to bring in much-needed funds. I support many charities and organizations, especially BUSES4HOMELESS who support homeless people with food, shelter, counselling and help into independence.”
