Strike a pose! Grab your velour tracksuit and put on your tinted sunglasses. Winchester Science Centre continues its celebration of 20 years of science wow by taking visitors back to the ‘stylish’ days of 2002. Between Saturday 19 March and Sunday 8 May, including the Easter school holiday, visitors will be recruited to the Planet Protectors, a team of noughties eco-fashion warriors. Fun facts and explosive demos will bring to life how fashion can affect the climate. Visitors can also blast off into the Solar System in the Planetarium, get hands-on with the two floors of interactive exhibits and head outside into nature in Bio:Space.

Winchester Science Centre is revisiting some of its most popular themes and demos in 2022. This spring it’s climate and the environment – with a 2002 fashion twist! Back in the noughties sustainable fashion became a hot topic of conversation. We became aware of our fashion footprint. How clothes are made, how they’re shipped and where they end up when we’re finished with them all impact our planet. So fashion designers, high street shops and scientists have teamed up. Innovative labs are finding new sustainable fabrics. Alternative fuels are being used in manufacturing and shipping. And the effects of waste from fast fashion are being tackled. All to help our planet!

This spring, visitors are being recruited to join the Planet Protectors to explore the carbon cycle of clothes. Discover why green is the new black when it comes to fabric dying. Delve into the world of alternative fuels. And the catwalk of science threads wouldn’t be complete without some epic demos. Discover more about ocean acidification through an awesome experiment. Watch as fabric is transformed using only natural dyes. And, to celebrate 20 years of science wow, the Inspirers will be bringing back the hugely popular exploding hydrogen balloons.

And that’s not all there is to do at Winchester Science Centre this spring…

There are two brand new shows ready to blast visitors off on an adventure in the Planetarium. Head off on an out-of-this-world family journey in the live show, Atmospheres. Every planet is unique, including our own. What do their atmospheres tell us about them? What secrets will they reveal? Find out together. Or why not zoom off on a tour of the icy landscapes of the Solar System in the subtitled film show, Ice Worlds. Find out how ice has sculpted and transformed the Solar System, including right here on Earth.

Come rain or shine, in the nature-based experimentation zone, Bio: Space, families can take part in some exciting activities, both inside and outside. Themed around the season and the Science Centre’s stunning South Downs National Park location, there’ll be something for everyone to get involved in.

And don’t forget the hugely popular, and huge in size, explosive demos in Science Live that take place right on the exhibition floor throughout the day. These are definitely not ones to try at home! Families can also embark on an exhilarating adventure through the Science Centre’s immersive exhibits including the out-of-this-world Explorer: Space zone and tuneful sound, hearing and vibration exhibition. Venture into an enormous 10m long guitar to feel the vibrations, experience the wonder of acoustics inside the sonic rocket and climb inside a giant ear to explore its inner workings. Laugh and learn together by making sounds in the huge echo tubes, discover more about decibels, rhythm and frequency and try your hand at British Sign Language. There’s even an opportunity to join the rescue crew to save Humphrey the Humpback Whale and meet the experts in the bringing Research to Life zone, plus so much more!
