Review - Stratford Butterfly Farm
What to do on a bank holiday Monday when you want to spend a bit of time with your cousins ? As I'm the fountain of all knowledge of what to do and where to go in the family I suggested the Butterfly Farm in Startford upon Avon as it's a personal favourite of mine and I never ever tire of seeing the glorious butterfly's !
We arrived nice and early and easily got a parking spot near the farm and perfect for a visit to the park after excitedly entered the farm. We left our jackets on the pegs as it was already warming up outside and it's always lovely and toasty inside , so make sure you take of those layers !
As soon as we entered we all let out a gasp of ' aaaww look at that one and that one etc..' it was liking stepping into a scene from a film set ! We walked round excitedly picking out all the different coloured buttefly's and watching them flutter by on their sweet merry way ! We followed the trail and ticked off on the list of all the ones that we spotted which was very exciting and satisfying too.
Next the handling station , who was brave enough to hold the millipede or the beetle , not I said Erin aged 7 , so Aunty Lisa had a hold and gently encouraged Erin to have a hold too, who said that was a lot easier than I thought ! So we all felt very brave and adventurous ! Now to find the Iguana who we failed to spot on the first time round and who we wanted to tick off our list !
We absolutely loved it and each time you visit , you always find something new to see and just have a delightful time admiring all things of nature .
It's a great day out in Stratford so take a picnic to make a day of it on the river and in the fab park too.
A note from my cousin
My daughter and I had such a lovely time today wandering around looking at the amazing butterflies and moths. We could have spent several hours gazing in wonderment. We definitely definitely recommend a visit and you can handle giant millipede and Mexican hissing cockroaches too if you are brave enough!
Parking is to be paid at ticket machine , so make sure you have change. Plus don't wear too many heavy coats as it's very warm inside !
Enjoy the unique pleasure of watching hundreds of the world's most spectacular and colourful butterflies flying all around. You can see them feeding and flying in a wonderful tropical environment.
Our landscaped tropical greenhouse is the largest tropical butterfly display in the UK! Throughout the year we have over 250 different species of tropical butterfly sourced from 20 different countries. There are approximately 1,500 free flying individual butterflies, of all shapes, sizes and colours. Sometimes there are a few more, sometimes a few less.
To appreciate the true beauty of butterflies in flight follow the link below. Epic Tech Media have captured our butterflies in all their majestic glory in slow-motion. We hope that you enjoy the film!
Have fun spotting our two resident Iguanas, Stumpy and Princess. They are green Iguanas from South America, donated to the Butterfly Farm about 8 years ago. They like to hide up in the trees and bask in the warmth on top of the heaters where they keep a watchful eye on the goings on below!
There are a number of birds that live in the rainforest flight area, they have all been chosen because just like our iguanas they are non-insectivorous. This means they like to eat seeds and fruit and not our butterflies! We have two colourful Indian Ring Necked Parakeets, a couple of African Mousebirds, with distinctive spikey hairstyles and long tail feathers and small ground dwelling birds called Chinese Painted Quail.
