How to make your children’s party go with a bang!
Kids birthday parties have always been big business - gone are the days of pass the parcel, jelly and ice cream and a round or two of musical bumps! As mum of two party crazy girls myself, (one August born and one on Christmas Eve), I have my hands full every year trying to think of something new and innovative for them to wow their friends with. We have had pony parties, pottery painting parties, swimming parties, sleepover parties and disco parties.
Having watched me edit images from my Photo-Shoot Make-over Parties over the years, for her 11th birthday my eldest (the Christmas Eve baby!) wants to utilize my Studio for her very own Photo-Shoot Makeover Party, an idea I am of course more than happy to accommodate as it will save me a few pennies at a very expensive time of year!
The very popular Photo-Shoot Make-over Party is every ‘tweenage’ girl’s dream. Aimed at 9-13 year olds, the party lasts 2 hours and takes place in my Redditch studio. The girls start with a mini-makeover, their make-up applied and hair styled by a professional beautician, then the rest of their time is spent posing model-style on different backdrops. I capture a range
of images both of individuals and as a giggly group. The birthday girl is given the responsibility of choosing three clothing themes for her friends to bring along, and can add in props and accessories if she wishes too.
I have a Bluetooth speaker the girls can use to play their music, and I provide soft drinks and nibbles to keep their energy levels up during the magazine-style shoot. Once the two hours are up, families usually choose to continue the party with food either in town at the Kingfisher Centre in the Hub (a 5 minute walk away), or at the neighbouring Café who do a lovely high tea on a decorated party table.
Instead of party bags, the girls will receive their images as digital jpeg files in an online gallery they can access at home and share with friends and family.
My soon-to-be 11 year old is so excited to be hosting her own Photo-Shoot Makeover-Party for her BFF’s, and my only regret is that I wasn’t offering the Cake Smash Splash & Shoot Package when my girls were babies . . .
The Cake Smash concept drifted over to the UK from America a few years ago and although many people have attempted to mimic it in this country, only a few of us have actually mastered it as well as the American’s. Only this week a video circulated Facebook of a baby diving into a pan of rich, brown, Nutella for the camera, and it just looked like he’d had a bad tummy upset! The choice of cake to be smashed is critical. After a couple of years of making my own, I now use the Red Cake Company, an award-winning local wedding cake supplier.
The ideal time for the Cake Smash is the first birthday, but I have had a few 2 year olds in the past. The package includes the custom-designed cake, plus use of a matching outfit, bunting and balloons. The images
make lovely birthday party invitations or thank you cards and are a treasured keepsake of a very special stage of your baby’s life. I always finish the shoot with a vintage bubble bath for some bonus cutesy shots and so baby leaves the studio squeaky clean after all the messy fun.
Our children are little for such a small amount of time and it’s so important to record their childhood in pictures they, and you, will cherish in years to come.
