Sunflower Lanyard Scheme
Living with a hidden disability can make life a lot more demanding and also be difficult for others to recognise so The Sunflower Lanyard Scheme started at Gatwick Airport as a discreet way of letting staff know that the wearer has a hidden disability such as Autism and will require additional assistance. The scheme has become so successful that over a million lanyards have been handed out and are recognised in hospitals, train stations and national stores including Sainsbury’s and Argos.
80% of those with disabilities have hidden conditions which is why the scheme is so important. It is suitable for all ages and you don’t have to be receiving any kind of benefit to get one. If you feel you or someone you care about would benefit from having one, maybe to show that sometimes they need a little space or patience, lanyards are available to buy on the Hidden Disabilities website www.hiddendisabilitiesstore.com. For any who doesn’t feel comfortable wearing a lanyard there’s also a range of stickers, ribbons, badges and wristbands.
Many of our local attractions encourage accessibility for all so you will also find the Sunflower Lanyard Scheme recognised at;
Ape rescue centre outside Wareham also offers Autism days, wheelchair and mobility scooter hire, sensory statues for the visually and hearing impaired visitors, adaptions in their children's play area.
As much or as little help as you need is available form staff. Walkways are all even (apart from some areas in the woodland walk), ramps are provided and doorways extra wide.
Avon Tyrrell are committed to being a fully accessible centre and strive to give everyone the same opportunities to experience, learn and develop through adventure and discovery. They understand the needs are different for everyone and for this reason we have specialised staff who are passionate about inclusion to ensure we can discuss your needs and understand how we can best accommodate them.
Marwell have a comprehensive accessibility policy including queue assistance at the admissions huts, quiet spaces and a handy list of tips to help you to plan your day away from busy areas.
