Secluded Swim - Review!
We've been for a Secluded Swim!
I think swimming regularly is important both for fitness and making sure that children are confident in the water but will confess to not going as often as we should do.
The good intentions are there but sometimes the thought of a packed pool on the weekend doesn’t thrill me and at 5 foot 2” I always seem to be about the right height to have someone’s armpit in my face at some point so we end up finding something else to do.
The prospect of a private pool though fills me with happiness, especially a warm one! Secluded Swim in Ferndown (opposite Tesco) is just that. Shiny and new, the pool opened a few months ago to great reviews. It’s available to hire by groups but also to normal people like you and me!
There are so many people who can benefit from this pool, babies who need the water warmer, those who feel overwhelmed the noise at the public pool, if you feel a bit body conscious or if you just want to enjoy swimming with your family without getting splashed by everyone else.
You hire the pool for one hour which includes your changing time. There are 2 large changing rooms, (no getting elbowed in places you don’t want to be elbowed in because you’re crammed with the kids in a single cubicle) or there are spacious toilets if you’d rather get changed in there, to be honest you have the place to yourself you can get changed wherever you like! The changing rooms have baby changing mats, playpens, toys to help keep the little ones amused while you get changed. The toilets are also equipped with toddler training seats and steps, it really is VERY family friendly.
The pool is 10m long and 1.2m deep, deep enough for an adult to swim, but not so deep that my youngest was out of her depth. It’s blissfully warm, the air temperature is lovely and so is the water. You don’t feel that horrible shudder course through your body that you get going in to a cold pool and you don’t start shivering the moment you get out. This all adds up to a much more relaxing experience.
As an extra treat I’d brought snorkels and flippers (from Decathlon – bargain price!) which just added to the fun. They splashed away, happy as a pig in mud without having to be considerate of other pool users, had all the floats and toys to themselves and enjoyed the water with no inhibitions. It was fantastic and it turned out my camera is waterproof and takes some pretty funny pictures. Getting my daughter to get out the pool at the end was a challenge but always a sign that she’s had a good time.

UPDATE: We've been 3 times now and already seeing a big improvement in the family's swimming from being in the more relaxed atmosphere. At a public pool, my daughter is inclined to mess around a lot which is fine because she's having fun but does very little swimming. At Secluded Swim she's having more fun and getting pleasure from swimming up and down the pool mermaid style without having to worry about avoiding people. There's an amazing improvement in her swimming in just those 3 hours! My son has Asperger's syndrome, he can swim fine but is generally on edge at public pools, there's too many people, too much noise so he never truly relaxes but at SS he's at ease, enjoys himself. Obviously as a mum it's great to see him having fun and also how much more relaxed he is for the rest of the day because of it. I'm sure anyone with any kind of anxiety can appreciate how nice it is to truly relax and the benefits that has on your mood afterwards.
For me, I'm enjoying the fact I actually get to swim! Previously when we've gone swimming I've only really wallowed because I'm always on 'Mum guard', checking the young one doesn't leave my sight and get in to trouble, checking my eldest isn't feeling overwhelmed. Going to Secluded Swim and actually being able to put my face in the water and swim properly knowing my son is happy and my daughter is swimming alongside like a little dolphin changes swimming from a chore to a pleasure.
