Hengistbury Head, now an official learning trust!
Hengistbury Head has been validated as a learning destination by the Children’s University Trust
Since opening in 2014, Hengistbury Head whose motto is ‘explore, learn, discover’ has balanced attracting nationwide visits including parents, home-schoolers and teachers with delivering quality education sessions whilst in a safe environment.
The Children’s University is a charitable trust which offers 7 to 14-year olds (and 5 to 6-year olds with their families) exciting and innovative learning activities and experiences outside school hours. This process of learning enables participants to develop and improve their skills in a fun and engaging way.
The validation is accompanied by a partnership with Bournemouth University. This partnership ensures that children from all backgrounds have access to extracurricular activities that benefit their learning. The nationwide scheme- Passport to Learning works to build confidence and inspire a love for learning.
It is hoped that this development will have a positive impact on children by encouraging students from local schools to get out into nature and learn something new about their local wildlife.
The first session was held on Saturday, 19th January 2019. Children who attended this session titled ‘Save Our Seas’ got to learn more about the issues affecting marine wildlife on a local and global scale. The day comprised of games, recycled craft activities and a scavenger hunt designed to get the children thinking about marine and coastal conservation. The children also got a chance to give back to their local community and take action against plastic pollution through litter-picking.
