Elsecar Heritage Railway

Activities

You are sure of a warm welcome at Elsecar Heritage Railway.

Being based near Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, at Elsecar they know how to make you welcome and look forward to greeting you at our station, on the trains or even on the footplate.

Come and experience railway travel from 60+ years ago. Enjoy the sounds and smells of our steam engine and the friendly crew will let you up close and tell you how it works.

Experience the power of the heritage diesel fleet too. Travel in antique carriages still heated by steam and with doors that you have to open the window to get out!

Learn about the line and its association with the Rockingham family and their iron and coal empire and as you travel in the train look out for some very important industrial archaeology, like the Newcomen Beam Engine House and Hemingfield Colliery and canal basin.

Elsecar Heritage Railway primarily run on Sundays and Bank Holidays. The Sunday services are usually at 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00, but please check the timetable and web-site carefully for the day you intend to visit.www.elsecarrailway.co.uk

These prices are for ‘day rover’ tickets and can be used on any/all of our services on the day.

Disabled Access

Elsecar Heritage Railway welcome all customers with disabilities or using a wheelchair.  Please ask one of the station staff for assistance to board the train.  As the carriages are from the 1950s they do not have wheelchair accessible doors, however on most services they are able to offer a ride in our Guard’s Van, through the wide parcels doors, and they have a ramp to make access easy with a Porter to assist you. Please phone 01226 746746 in advance to check that they are to accommodate you on the day you wish to travel.  A wheelchair accessible toilet is available on the station.
