Just before schools went back, we decided there was time to take just one last holiday trip out and chose to visit Birdland, coincidentally on what turned out to be a lovely sunny day; we were not disappointed in our choice!
We had to prebook our 2 hour slot, which is becoming the norm now, but I found booking online was really easy.
Set in the picturesque and very popular village of Bourton on the Water in the beautiful Cotswolds, we were welcomed into Birdland by such kind and friendly staff, which makes such a difference in these somewhat stressful times. Our friends were going to be a little late, so my son and I wasted no time and set off having checked it would be OK to return to the gate to collect them when they arrived!
We were delighted to have different views of the penguins both in the water and lazing around the edge of the pool; they made us laugh with their antics. All the way round, outside the many enclosures there are information boards with interesting facts and figures about the different species, with maps strategically located too, in case you get lost in the 9 acres of woodland and gardens!
With the 2 boys racing ahead to see what came next, I have a feeling we may have missed a couple of enclosures, but that’s a good excuse to go back – as if we needed one!!
There are many hides dotted about for avid bird/nature spotters to quietly watch to see what is around, or for parents just to take a rest, maybe!
We embarked on the Jurassic Journey and had great fun spotting Dinos or all shapes and sizes as we walked through. There was even a spot where we could make a noise like a dino, which was very popular. We stopped in a lovely spot part way round for a picnic lunch and the boys managed to find some trees to climb as we rested our weary feet! And then it was off again past the variety of flamingos, so pale and some so vivid, with their long and spindly but elegant legs.
Although we given a 2 hour slot we certainly didn’t feel rushed, but we were aware of not going over our time….though I think we may have. The boys had a play on the equipment at the children’s play area and a great time was had by all.
We passed through the shop before leaving the world of birds and dinos and back into the reality of the business of Bourton on the Water! We can certainly recommend a visit….
