Living Streets has been campaigning for better places to walk for 90 years and that means for everyone. Our vision is that every child who can walk to school, does so and we aim to support schools and families through our Walk to School campaigns such as Walk Once a Week (WoW).

This year, to celebrate our 90th anniversary, the challenge will get to the heart of walking and how it can benefit the whole community as well as improve individual wellbeing.

Each year we develop a new five-day walking challenge aimed at primary schools - the perfect activity to take part in during Walk to School Week.

Families are encouraged to walk to school and pupils log their journeys on a wall chart or touch screen Travel Tracker and at the end of the month are rewarded with a collectible badge. The designs for the badges are chosen from a national competition for children each year and they are made from recycled yogurt pots!

Walking to school is an easy way to build some physical activity into the day - for children and their parents or carers. Grown-ups say they enjoy the opportunity to spend some quality time with their children, teachers say pupils arrive in the classroom alert and ready to learn and, most importantly, children say they enjoy the opportunity to meet up and chat with friends and explore their local neighbourhood.

We can all benefit from some exercise and fresh air and 11_walk_2_school2.jpgwalking doesn't always mean a longer journey time. By the time you've got the car out, bundled the children in, negotiated rush hour traffic and then found a parking space, it's often just as quick to walk.

Mum of two Kate Medhurst, says ditching the car and walking her children to school changed her life, reducing her stress levels and giving them all an opportunity for some quality family time each day. She says:"I have just got back this morning from walking my children to school. We enjoy watching the changing seasons, the flowers coming out and my daughter spends a lot of time on the walk looking for worms - they have so much fun."
