Great Summer Days Out

1. National Space Centre (Leicester)

Follow in the footsteps of Tim Peake and head into outer space at the National Space Centre. Journey through six interactive galleries, the UK’s largest planetarium, a unique 3D Simulator Experience and the iconic 42m high Rocket Tower. Under 5s go free.

Opening times: Sunday to Friday: 10am – 5pm / Saturday: 10am – 4pm

2. Gruffalo Spotting (Across England)

If you venture into the deep dark woods you may bump into the Gruffalo or the Gruffalo's Child! Follow the interactive clues along the trails to track down characters from The Gruffalo. Each Gruffalo has been carved in a different position - the one at Wyre Forest is fast asleep!

3. National Museum of Scotland (Edinburgh)

Last year saw the opening of ten new galleries at the National Museum of Scotland full of science, technology, art, design and fashion. See one of the world’s first home computers, Britain’s oldest motorcycle and the world’s first bionic arm, or take part in activities and events for all ages. Free entry.

Opening times: 10am to 5pm

4. Parkrun (UK)

Hit the ground running with some of the nation’s favourite Olympic and Paralympic heroes at parkruns across the UK on Saturday 19 August. With more 88657803b1e7af787dc8df3c6c034451(8).jpgthan 630 free parkruns (5k) and junior (2k) parkruns happening each weekend now is the time to join #teamparkrun.

5. Talgarth Mill (Brecon)

Budding bakers can make their own culinary creations and mill their very own flour at Talgarth Mill.  Take a tour of the historic watermill with a guide, or book a session to do some milling yourself. After your hard work, enjoy some home baked treats in the Baker’s Table Café. Family tickets available for £9 (2 adults and 2 children).

Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday between April and October: 10am to 4pm

6. Connswater Community Greenway (Belfast)

Visit an urban oasis of trees, plants and wildlife. Follow the Connswater, Knock and Loop Rivers through the heart of east Belfast. Take in the landscape of Victoria Park and head to CS Lewis Square, where you’ll find one of the world’s most loved literary lions cast in bronze.

7. The Magic Garden (Devon)

In its latest enchanting storytelling show, Boo to a Geese theatre company is bringing a magical garden to life for families. Perfect for children up to 5 years, this interactive, multisensory performance at libraries across Devon will delight children with puppets and music.

8. Falls of Shin Visitor Centre (Scottish Highlands)

The newly re-opened Falls of Shin visitor centre – rising from the ashes of a blaze four years ago - gives you the unique chance to take in the natural beauty of the falls and catch a glimpse of 588b11ad7a92d13777fe0be3adf633bf(3).jpgsalmon leaping upstream. Enjoy a coffee break with a view at the new café and shop.

Opening times: 10am - 5pm each day

9. The Sill Discovery Centre (Northumberland)

From Saturday 29 July be amongst the first to visit this newly opened eco-friendly centre in Northumberland National Park. Enjoy incredible views from the centre’s unique grass topped roof or discover interactive games, poetry, stories and music in its exhibitions. 

Opening times: 9.30am to 6 pm

10. On The Bench (Hull)

Step aboard The Floating Cinema as it travels to Hull and enjoy artist Harry Meadley’s latest video series On the Bench. These eight films document conversations with people about imagination, history and the modern world.

Opening times: Monday 7 August to Saturday 13 August
