Two mums based in Twickenham are over the moon to have secured one of the UK's biggest mother and baby retailers, JoJo Maman Bebe, for their scooter accessory business, SKOOBANDZ, just six months after launching.
SKOOBANDZ are cool, fun, stretchy bands in different colours and styles that can be collected to personalise kids scooters.
Scooters are the new bike and the most popular mode of transport for youngsters today. So, when Emma Barnsdale and Jules King noticed that their kids and their friends loved collecting red rubber bands dropped by postmen from the pavement to stretch over their scooters they came up with the idea for SKOOBANDZ.
Says Jules: We love being mums but financially needed to return to work. Over the last few years we have both had those moments when you come up with a potentially good idea and then do absolutely nothing about it. Then 2 years later you see that idea in the shops and kick yourself!
Emma adds: "We made a promise to each other that we wouldn't give up until something stopped us. Although it has been lots of hard work and we have had some very challenging and stressful moments along the way it has also been fun. Every time we see a SKOOBANDZed scooter it brings a smile to our faces."
The pair's biggest challenge has been launching a business while caring for five young children between them. "We've made calls to accountants on the school run, designed packaging with children climbing on us, begged favours for free childcare and timed phone calls around lunchtime naps (not ours!)," says Emma. "The kids have loved it though as we've played 'shops' numerous times in a bid to find out what their favourite coloured bands would be!"
Children can choose from funky neons, scrumptious candies and super cool glowies and the response from kids and parents alike has been fantastic. Chris, Manager of Action Bikes in Whitton says "At Action Bikes we sell all kinds of scooters. SKOOBANDZ are a fun brand and a great pocket money purchase for kids."
SKOOBANDZ are stocked in JoJo Maman Bebe nationwide and local toy and bike/scooter shops.
