founder of Baby Food Company Piccolo, Cat Gazzoli, goes the extra mile, launching the UK's first 100% recyclable pouch

An important move for an industry which sells over 60 million non-recyclable pouches every year

  • Cat Gazzoli has had her hands full this past year, having given birth to daughter Scarlett in Lockdown 1 and successfully launching the UK's first fully recyclable baby food pouch.
  • Yellow & Go is the first ever mono-material, fully recyclable pouch.
  • The first to be suitable for kerbside recycling.
  • Piccolo has partnered with First Mile so parents can recycle the pouches from home, at no cost to them.

Baby food brand, Piccolo, is celebrating Earth Day 2021 by launching the UKs first 100% recyclable baby food pouch, and the first suitable for kerbside recycling.

Piccolo has partnered with recycling scheme, First Mile, to ensure all parents can recycle their Yellow & Go pouches from home. The multipack box doubles up as a returns box, with a QR code that allows parents to simply download the free returns label to put on the box and send to First Mile. This system is in place as currently only 20% of local councils in the UK recycle this plastic kerbside.

Why NOW?! Piccolo's commitment to future generations

Cat Gazzoli, founder of Piccolo believes that the time to act is now. Rather than wait for recycling standards to improve, she found a solution which allows consumers 33cf2569c0784b43d6e9508f3e99a40f.jpgto recycle their pouches. Whilst other brands aim to improve the recyclability of their pouches in the next 3 to 5 years, Piccolo is taking steps now to ensure a greener future.

The launch is backed by one of the UK's most experienced sustainability practitioners, Jonathon Porritt.  Jonathon comments: "Piccolo launching the UK's first 100% recyclable baby food pouch shows its commitment to future generations at time where we're facing a true climate emergency.  We must act now to change, and I hope that this move will encourage other brands to follow suit."

Cat, comments: "This is a really complex issue because of the lack of infrastructure to support recycling systems in the UK.  We're not prepared to wait years until the wider problem is resolved, so we're working with First Mile to find the solution now. There's simply no time to wait."

How it works…

Piccolo's new Yellow & Go pouches are the first in the baby food market to be suitable for ‘closed-loop' recycling. This new design is made using one material (rather than the standard plastic and aluminium) meaning they can be used time and time again to make more reusable plastic. Whilst existing pouches on the market may find one more use, the plastic in these new pouches will never need to be placed in landfill.

Say hello to Yellow & Go!

The Yellow & Go pouches are the latest addition to the ‘& Go' collection which launched in 2019 and are 7722d25493a654cd5107c5008c9ae1bb.jpgmade of 80% plant-derived materials.

The smoothies are a blend of bananas, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, mangoes, rice flour and coconut milk.

Available in Boots in store as part of the new eco-fixture which champions sustainable products. They will also be available from Boots online, Ocado and Piccolo's online store. RRP £3.50 for a multipack containing 4 pouches.
