Hoodles Playbarn & Coffee Shop
Happy 10th Birthday Hoodles Playbarn!
Team Raring2go! was delighted to be part of Hoodles Playbarn’s 10th Birthday celebrations in April – and to join the team (past and present) to toast the success of the business over the last 10 years.
Anna and Richard Stephen who set up Hoodles Playbarn, and the Hoodles Nursery nearby in Oldmeldrum in 2008, with an empty steading on the family farm and a vision. Anna explains, “We wanted to provide quality fun for children in an attractive and comfortable surrounding appealing to adults as much as their families as well as to provide delicious food, home bakes and drinks - really delivering a wonderful experience for all.”
When Hoodles first opened it really was the first of its kind in the area and set the benchmark for those who have opened since. However, while they have developed and introduced new things over the last 10 years, Hoodles remains true to the ethos Anna and Richard first had – to provide a place where children could have fun indoors and out, and where their grown-ups could also enjoy the time with their wee ones, or with friends over great food and coffee.
The success of the Playbarn over the last decade is testament to Anna and Richard and their management team and staff’s hard work, passion and dedication.
They have helped to build other businesses in the local community, such as Laura and Vio Ekto initially housing their business, Laura’s Gym, in part of the Playbarn’s steading and then helping them launch Ekto Sport’s Academy in a purpose-built building onsite. Many other businesses run classes at Hoodles - Wee Songsters, Storyland, Yoga Bellies and Arlene Penny Highland Dancing, and the couple and their businesses have strong links to the local community of Oldmeldrum.
Anna’s passion and hospitality expertise coupled with Richard’s hands-on family farming business have combined to give Hoodles it’s unique atmosphere – as a great place to play, to meet and to eat for families both old and new, as well as those holidaying or passing through the area.
Anna explained, “We like to think we go one step further for all who come through our doors – littlethings that make a difference, like providing extra assistance with carrying trays or drinks and helping children put their shoes or coat on.”
This summer The Courtyard is being refreshed and more play equipment will be added to The Paddock to go with the Grass Sledges, Jelly Belly and trampolines and more is planned for 2019. The Stephens are not a family who stands still. Anna says, “Richard has so many ideas of what he wants to add in The Paddock – things he would have loved to do as a child (and still does) – so watch this space!”
The simple aim of all those who work at Hoodles is to put a smile on people’s faces – to ensure that they leave happier than when they arrived!

Check out our delicious puddings, my favourite is the limoncello trifle, not suitable for the kids, but there are some other scrummy recipes that the whole family can enjoy! Take a look in our pudding section for recipes to make summer BBQ's and eating alfresco all the more tasty! My girls LOVE the chocolate pizza - making it, but mostly eating it!
